Snow emergencies are typically called when there is a solid forecast of 8+ inches of snow.

If a snow emergency is called, vehicles must be removed from designated snow emergency routes by the declared time, or be subject to ticketing and/or towing. Vehicles may not return to snow emergency routes until the snow emergency has been lifted. Any car parked on a snow emergency route during a snow emergency will be towed.

FREE parking during the snow emergency will be available for residents at the following garages:

You must pull a ticket upon entry.

All vehicles must be removed from parking garages when the snow emergency is lifted. The City of Lancaster will make every effort to schedule the end of the snow emergency to give residents ample time to plan and move their cars. Regular hourly rates will commence after that time.

If your car is towed during a snow emergency, the four tow companies below will be handling towing on the streets listed. Owners should contact the tow company directly to get their car back.

DO NOT save parking spots with any furniture or other items at any time. This poses a hazard to yourself, your neighbors, snow removal equipment, and city staff. Anything placed in the street is subject to confiscation.


Property owners are required to clear their sidewalks and the openings to any crosswalks of snow and ice within five hours of the end of the snow. If the snow ends overnight, the property owner has until 10 a.m. 

Do not throw or blow snow into the street when cleaning off your vehicles or sidewalks after the snow plow has gone through. Please pile the snow in grassy areas and along the curb. We understand that this can be difficult during large snowfalls, and appreciate your good-faith effort to keep snow out of the streets while clearing your sidewalks!

Please be considerate of your neighbors. Have a neighbor who’s not home, elderly or has mobility issues? Please take some time and help them out with this task.

If you need assistance with snow removal, consider reaching out for a volunteer through Dig Out Lancaster County, a private Facebook group. Go to www.facebook.com/groups/DiggingOutLancasterCounty for more information. 

If there is a fire hydrant or storm drain adjacent to your property, please clear it. 

If you have an issue with a property that has not cleared snow or ice within the allotted time frame, you can report the address to Housing at (717) 291-4706 or housing@cityoflancasterpa.gov.


Please do not drive during a snow emergency unless absolutely necessary. The fewer vehicles on the road, the better our crews can clear them!

Do not double park, or abandon your vehicle in small streets and alleys. This can block plows from passing through.

Park in designated parking areas, close to the curb and not partially out in the street. Pull your mirrors in if possible, especially when parking on narrow streets.


Street cleaning maintains a regular schedule year-round, except when suspended due to holidays or extreme weather. Cancellations will be communicated via our website, social media, text message alerts and email. Per City ordinance, the street cleaning schedule will resume 48 hours after a snow emergency is lifted. Utilizing the street cleaning schedule even when snow remains on the ground allows the Department of Public Works to continue to clear travel and parking lanes from snow, as well as normal street cleaning debris. This work aims to ensure access to safe travel and accessible parking for all residents. Vehicles may return to the parking lane after the snow plow passes.
